Why is Reiki associated with dragons?

Jan 17, 2026

I took basic Reiki training in 1994-1995. It all began earlier that year when I was in a bookstore and a book fell and hit me on my head. The book was called Hands of light by Barbara Brennan. I took it as a sign that there was something I needed to know from this book so I bought the book and funny enough still have it in my collection and possession 30 years on.

When I initially cracked it open to read it, it was like reading Greek. In that I did not understand much of it at all. I had no context for what was said as hands on healing had no been part of my world until it was introduced.

I explored becoming a hands on healer, mainly I did sessions for friends, family and my cat and other people’s animals. The best way to describe what happens is you call on universal energy to fill you and run through you and your hands. That energy is then transferred onto and into whoever is in front of you. They receive healing from the experience. You are like a vessel for the energy to come through.

I wasn’t entirely surprised when the connection between dragons and reiki became apparent in conversations I was having for the podcast as Reiki originates in Japan. Mikao Usui the founder had a spiritual experience on a mountain around 1922 and the energy healing technique developed from there. From its humble beginnings it has since spread worldwide. I do not think it is quite a household name in the west but definitely is more commonly known today.

As part of the east and Asia, the Japanese have a strong reverence for and relationship with dragons.

There is actually a specialized dragon reiki where dragons are included in the healing process. It is considered an advanced form. From there it is a small leap for dragons to be mentors and guides and to help and work with humans to provide healing in this way.
